Sealing, Painting, or Staining a Wood Fence

Synthetic fences need minimal maintenance to keep them looking great, but a wood fence will last much longer with regular upkeep. We recommend sealing, staining, or painting to shield your wood from the elements. Sun, rain, and temperatures take a toll on wood fences. Be sure to seal, paint, or stain your new wood fence within 30 days to 6 weeks after installation. It's also important to take weather conditions into account, as well as the pre-treatment process the wood has undergone. We suggest not sealing the fence immediately after it's been installed. Allow 4 – 6 weeks for the wood to naturally expand and contract while it's adapting to sunlight and temperature variations.

Water is one of the worst enemies of your new wood fence, and it's important to protect the wood by applying a barrier. Wood sealers provide protection and come in a number of options, ranging from transparent to semi-transparent. Sun exposure also damages wooden fences over time. When selecting a sealer, we recommend choosing one that contains a UV stabilizer. Be sure to reseal your wood fence every year to get the longest lifespan out of your investment!

Wood must be completely dry to accept stain. How do you know if your wood fence is dry enough for staining? Simple. Sprinkle drops of water onto its surface. Is the water beading on the surface? If so, the wood is not ready to accept stain. The stain will need to be absorbed into wood. After a few days, try the water test again. Once the water no longer beads, your wood fence is ready to stain. Similar to sealer, make sure your stain has a UV stabilizer. It's also a good idea to choose a stain with water repellent.

It's time to paint that new fence! First, the wood must be completely dry. Use the same water test that we recommended above. If the wood doesn't pass the test, wait several days and try it again. Once the wood is dry, we recommend using an alkyd oil-based primer on every surface of the fence, including all edges and cut ends. Next, apply two coats of acrylic latex paint. Choose the best quality paint that your budget allows. Reapply paint as necessary, which could be annually or as often as needed depending on your situation.

Cleaning Your Wood Fence

Keeping your wood fence clean is a straightforward process and as long as you follow a few easy tips it will look great for years to come. Use a pressure washer on the low setting. This will clean the fence of dirt and mold. Also be sure to use a soap that is made specifically for cleaning pressure-treated wood. You may think using high pressure will provide a cleaner fence, but we recommend not using high pressure because it can damage the fence - especially if held in place for too long. Once clean and dry, reapply stain or sealant to minimize the effects of weather. Simple as that!
